You have to give them a reason to come out. Be it the icy grip of a northern winter or our suffocating summer heat, people will hibernate in their homes, but if there’s something to pull them out of the seasonal malaise, they’ll revel in it.

That’s the approach of Broad Street Cider and Ale, 2723 South Broad Street, and Roulaison Distilling, 2727 South Broad Street, STE 103, back of the building. While many bars and alcohol establishments tend to scale back on staff and events during the summer, these next-door neighbors (aka Alcohol Alley) are increasing staffing and hours, and offering more programming—tours, tastings, and movie and trivia nights—for their customers.

The strategy is working with both places bringing in more people reports Broad Street owners Jon Moore and Diana Powell and Roulaison owners Patrick Hernandez and Andrew Lohfeld.

The cidery boasts 11 homemade ciders, guest ales and ciders, and wines by the glass, and recently experienced its best week ever. Moore attributes it to the Wednesday movie nights, which are held in the Propeller parking lot and hosted by Carpark Cinema, and the recent addition of Friday trivia nights. Due to the heat of summer, the movies will move indoors starting the 4th of July with Independence Day.

Moore is elated to see the bigger crowds although a bit less enthusiastic about the movie choices.

“We’re in a deep, dark hole of millennial nostalgia, like Romeo and Juliet and Clueless“ says Moore.“And yeah, I identify as millennial, so I can be self effacing.”

Customers disagree with Moore’s critique, and there are plenty that grab a cold cider and join the bring-your-own chair crowd in the parking lot.

With numerous national awards and increased New Orleans availability (including Bar 1908 in the recently opened Pythian Market), Roulaison could be resting on its laurels, but they’re stepping up their game with “Summer Fridays.”

“We’ve had a lot of requests recently for visits and tours, so we’re expanding our available tours, offering free tasting samples of our “Core 4” Lineup: Traditional White, Overproof, Barrel Aged Blend, Amer from 3-5 pm, ½ price full rum pours, and we’ll be open until 8 p.m.,” says Hernandez.

Hernandez adds that people should follow them on Facebook and Instagram to find out about additional Friday specials and events. For more on Broad Street Cider and Ale, follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
