New Orleans has a way of luring you back. Like so many who first arrive to attend college, Pythian Market Controller Andrea Rance felt the lingering pull when she moved away in 2009 after graduating from Xavier University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

“I love this city,” says Rance. “And I would come back every year to speak at the Youth Motivating Task Force hosted by Xavier."

Rance had fallen in love with New Orleans’ joie de vivre: that undeniable joyful spirit that is reflected in its culture, music, and, as Rance puts it, “just the vibe.” She spent a few years working in Las Vegas as a senior tax accountant before returning to New Orleans in 2013 to serve as a financial accounting supervisor for Harrah’s.

Each new position that Rance has taken has been a vertical move, and she recently worked as a senior accounting consultant for Luther Speight and Company. Part of her responsibilities for the CPA firm included providing financial services for the Louis Armstrong Airport expansion, and with the project nearly complete, Rance decided to seek a new opportunity.

Rance became interested in the controller position at the Pythian Market, and she became more interested when she heard about the building’s history.

“I felt like this wasn’t something I could pass up,” Rance says.” The Pythian such a large role in the civil rights movement, and with its renovation and return, it’s brought back what this building originally stood for. You see that today in our motto, “Food Hall for All.” There’s such an inclusive spirit and you see it in our employees, the locals and our tourists.”

It’s hard to imagine Rance leaving New Orleans, especially since she’s now a mother to a New Orleanian: two-year old Audreana. Even on her days off, Rance brings her daughter to the market and feels that uniquely New Orleans vibe as she watches Audreana being welcomed by customers and market staffers.

“You can tell that our team really cares about you,” says Rance. “They take an interest and make you want to come in everyday and even on your days off.”
